Episode 70: Two Reports For the Price of Five (No Pictures)

My triumphant return to actually enjoying the table top began this week when I put my Plagueburst Crawlers in my closet and locked it. Let us never speak of those stupid models again.

Fortunately I was able to get my hands on a bunch of "Cultists" to match my ever increasing Skaven-Chaos army. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get them all stripped and re-based in time to use them in my games so I had a lot of empty bases in my test games which looked horrendous. Because of that I declined to take pictures of the games and I'll be doing more of an abridged report. Have no fear though, everything is now based so I just have to move forward with conversion work.

For my games I played two variations of a similar build, thanks to people on DakkaDakka who gave meaningful feedback on the list. Most people just shit talked it and were worthless but that's to be expected on the Internet when you aren't playing a known meta army. Oh well.

Game Overview

The Knights got First Turn and proceeded to shoot up a bunch of Cultists, both shootier Knights were on the right and the other two were on the left, because of that I overloaded on the right. Fortunately I didn't lose a unit thanks to some help from Alpha Legion and just not enough fire power.

On my Turn I got the Demon Prince with the Skullreaver into the dual gun Knight and killed it after putting a few wounds on with Autoguns. I also Death Hex'd the other Knight on the right and reduced it to rubble with Meltaguns and Autoguns.

From there we basically just played for fun, the Knights had no guns left that meant anything and also hadn't scored any Primary or Secondary Points. Some more Cultists got bashed around then the Demon Prince went in and finished off another Knight, and Turn 3 was the same. All in all the Demon Prince killed three Knights nearly from full which was pretty cool and thematic. Unfortunately there isn't much to write about because the game was so cut and dry. I knew I had no chance of losing just because Knights don't work in ITC Missions but it was good to put the list on the table and see how it moves.

Game Overview

We played ITC Mission 1 which I think favors me, the more Objectives the better. Eldar had a lot in Deep Strike so I deployed very centrally, eventually the Dark Reapers split with one unit on each flank, the Autarch on my left and the Farseer on my right. Both Wave Serpents went just off center with the Wraithguard. I fanned out a bit too much and had a unit out of Abaddon's Aura, I need to get back into the habit of deploying the army a bit better. My heavier hitters went on the right along with Ahriman to hopefully shut down some of the Farseer trickery. One Nurgling unit went right to hold an Objective, the other two scouted up on the right to try and tie the Dark Reapers up.

Before we got going the Rangers all deployed very far back and not in terrain, we did play on a bit sparse of a table but there were some forests and rocks they could have gone on. Eldar also got Turn 1 which I was okay with since I need to see how much punishment this list can take and Eldar are a good test with Dark Reapers not caring about -1 to Hit.

Both Reaper units moved out from the terrain they'd deployed behind and both Wraithguard units got out of the Wave Serpents and Advanced to my lines for some flaming although one unit needed to use a Command Re-roll. The Wraithfighter ran into my backlines but I'd bubbled all my Characters in so none of them could be shot. Nothing else moved and the Swooping Hawks didn't come in.

Guide went up on the Reapers and Executioner on the Nurglings, doing a few Wounds. Shooting spread out a bit due to LoS being broken up by the forests, one unit was left with ~15 models from the Guided Reapers, Wave Serpents, and one unit of Wraithguard. I took 5-10 casualties on two other units and lost two wounds off the Demon Prince from Rangers.

With no Charges I was able to deny kill a unit for both Old School and the turn since firepower wasn't dedicated to the Nurglings.

On my turn I moved the Demon Prince to deal with the Wraithfighter, the Overwatch would hurt but I should live and that's the Demon Princes only job this game. Unfortunately the Wraithfighter moved way too close so I had an unfailable Charge. Everything else moved forward to deal with the Wraithguard and Dark Reapers, including the Nurglings going up for a Charge. The badly shot up unit of Cultists recycled to the left to get into Rapid Fire of the Dark Reapers as much as possible.

Shriveling Pox went on the left Wraithguard unit with lets the bulk of my shooting wound on 5's. Prescience went on a healthy unit in Rapid Fire range and Warptime moved one of the other Cultist units to cover my Characters in case the Flier doesn't die. Shooting kills 8 Dark Reapers on the left with Autoguns from two units, I remove the Wraithguard on the left with all my Meltaguns, they rolled very well. On the left I killed the Wraithguard down to two with Autoguns, wounding on 5's helps a lot!

Charges went out from the Nurglings but one unit died to Overwatch with some insane rolls, the other unit got in though. My Demon Prince took two wounds from the Hemlock and got in, my recycled Cultists also Charged the Reapers as the Autarch Heroically Intervened. Lastly I Charged and surrounded the last two Wraithguard, hoping not to kill them so I could maintain the field position.

Combat killed all the Dark Reapers on the right except the Exarch, who promptly fled the field, while I lost a few models to the Autarch. My Nurglings did nothing and took a few wounds while the Demon Prince exactly killed the Hemlock thanks to its Spiritstones. I dragged down one of the Wraithguard while the other did no damage.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to hold more Objectives since I could't quite get to the center but I did kill more and score for Recon/Old School. I also have a fairly commanding lead since the Dark Reapers won't get to shoot this round.

Eldar Turn 2 had the Wave Serpents move up a bit while the Dark Reapers fell back. The Swooping Hawks came down on my left, the rest of the army was static. Smite and Executioner went out, leaving me with one Nurgling.

Shooting finished off the Nurgling with the Rangers as they also put two more wounds on the Demon Prince. Another Cultist unit got chewed up by the Serpents and Swooping Hawks but they weren't removed.

In Combat I put two wounds on the Autarch and lost a few Cultists, I also killed the last Wraithguard with some really fire rolls and Consolidated toward the action.

On my turn I moved everything towards the Dark Reapers except the Demon Prince who went hunting Swooping Hawks. In the Psychic Phase I failed to Shriveling Pox the Reapers but Warp Time'd another Cultist unit forward to tie them up and put Prescience on a healthier unit. I should have recycled a unit but the game was effectively over at this point and I didn't want to be a jerk.

Shooting brought one Wave Serpent down to two wounds and killed a few Reapers but most of my Cultists weren't in position due to LoS. The Demon Prince killed 9 Swooping Hawks and the Exarch passed Morale with Command Points, I also tied the Dark Reapers up again with a very depleted Cultist unit. I lost another few Cultists and took another wound off the Autarch.

At this point Eldar conceded the game, on  his turn he has very little firepower and will have to use it to finish off the Cultists, he'll also likely lose the Autarch. Then on my turn I can get everything in range for shooting and charging and remove what's left of the army.

Overall there were some major tactical errors by the Eldar army. He didn't use the Wave Serpents to tie me up, although the Demon Prince will throw them around like toy cars and the Meltaguns will take care of the other. I think the smart move would have been to do that on Turn 2 when I'd spread out a bit more. The Wraithguard also got killed for nothing, they needed to be counter-attack for the Demon Prince or to tie up Cultists that get too ambitious. The Hemlock also needed to fly to the other side of the table from the Demon Prince, I'd never be able to catch it and it'd be hard to take down. It's not a very useful model against me because I just won't let my Characters get caught out, I'd probably have to split the Warpsmiths and then get a cheeky Prescience + Warptime to take it down.

Overall the list performed extremely well and I love playing it. I need to get the rest of my movement trays and then I'll start practicing with a chess clock. As for changes I'm going to drop the Bloodmaster and give the Chaos Lord a Jump Pack + Power Axe for additional Relic opportunities, the Demon Prince also gets a Warp Bolter and a Cultist unit gets a Heavy Stubber. I also grab a Combi-Melta on the Lord which brings me up to 7, BS 2 Meltaguns.

Finally I'll be doing a video on how to play horde armies sometime this week in terms of making the clock work for you whether it's chess clock, timed turns, or just normal rounds. So be on the look out for that!
