Episode 35: I Wouldn't Advise Touching That... (Orks vs. Death Guard 2000 Points)

Been a slow week for me, stupid real life getting in the way of me pushing around plastic models and throwing dice! But I soldier on. This time I'm against Death Guard, captained by a local guy by the name of Ira I've seen around for years but have never played in any game. We actually conversed a bit on Facebook before the game as he's trying to make pure Death Guard work in a competitive setting. Currently his list is all foot-slogging, which I think will have issues in other games, but is actually great against Orks because it's more bodies and guns.

My intent was to test out the brand-new ITC Missions which use both Maelstrom of War and Eternal War elements, however Ira just wanted to see how his list would do in terms of playability and resilience so we just decided to do a straight-forward game. You'll probably notice that Objectives and so forth are setup, we came to the "no Mission" call during Turn 1 so they're freely ignored. No one wants to play Missions!

Note: This army is super illegal as Plague Marines can only have two Special Weapons per unit, I didn't know that at the time. I did make Ira aware of that but for this game it is what it is.

Scenario & Deployment
Vanguard Strike | None

I've actually not played this Deployment before, so that was fun. At the time of Deployment we were still doing a mission, although I was pretty straight forward anyways.

I went with my standard deployment, four Choppa units up front with a Big Mek and Warboss between for the auras. One unit goes way in the back for Da Jump, technically I should put them up front in case Da Jump fails but it would only do so on double 1's and I can burn a Command Point. Also they're unlikely to do much on Turn 1 anyways in terms of shooting so this just helps me keep things out of the way. Da Rippa and Grotsnik go where I think they'll do the best and the Gretchin are typically going to go somewhere out of LoS and then scramble for an Objective.

All the Death Guard also went down in a pretty normal fashion, each Plague Marine unit is as far up as it can be with the Blightbringers spread out. Characters and the Drones were more of the left so I put Grotsnik and Da Rippa there since I really need to kill those Drones and not let them keep flying away from Combat and spraying me with flamers.

Ira finished deploying far before me and since we were using an ITC Mission he got the +1 to go first. I then rolled a 1, simple stuff there, and was given Turn 1.

Orks Turn 1

Movement Phase
In typical Orkish fashion I advanced my whole army except the Pink Boyz and the Warbikes. Nothing really repositioned so I kept one Weirdboy with the Pinks, two on the left to help against the Drones, and one on the right to cast Da Jump on my Purple Boyz who also have Shootas.

Psychic & Shooting Phase
One Weirdboy was in range for Smite on the leftmost Plague Marines, which went off and killed 2. I then took 3 Mortal Wounds from the Perils. All my Warbikes on the left open up on the same Plague Marine unit, killing another 2, while the rest bounce off and for the most part miss.

Charge, Fight & Morale Phase
I had no Charges as I was pretty far out of range so my turn ended.

Death Guard Turn 1

Movement Phase
In a surprising move Ira moved up with his whole army despite being in Rapid Fire range, again no radical movements but one Drone did move more over to the Blue Boyz.

Psychic & Shooting Phase
Plague Wind goes off on the Green Boyz but only kills 2, Smite also goes into them and kills another 2. All the guns open up, mostly into the 'Ard Boyz, but I lose 2 Blues and 6 Reds from the Drones. My 'Ard Boyz get hit hard, losing 18 models, but all in all it could have been worse.

Charge, Fight & Morale Phase
Again, to my surprise, almost everything in the Death Guard army Charges! One Noxious Blightbringer, all the Plague Marines save one unit on the right, and both Drones get stuck in. Fortunately for me the Drone takes up a lot of real-estate when getting into my Green Boyz so the Plague Marines are going to have to Pile In and spread out. The leftmost Drone and rightmost Marines each take a Wound from Overwatch.

Combat starts with the full Plague Marine unit into my 'Ard Boyz, killing 1 or 2, I then use two Command Points to interrupt with the Red Boyz, netting me a Wound on the Drone and 4 Plague Marine kills. Ira finishes up his Chargers, killing a few Green Boyz, another 'Ard Boy, and a few Red Boyz.

Punches back from me kill 3 Plague Marines, as well as a Wound on the right Blight Drone. Thanks to leeching Morale none of my Boyz run and all the Plague Marines hold as well.

Orks Turn 2

Movement Phase
Well that was a weird turn! I'm actually quite bottle-necked now and going to have trouble unpacking my Characters, who I really need to help with those Blight Drones. My Blue Boyz Advance towards the naked Noxious Blightbringer, as do the Purple Boyz to wrap around the Plague Marines on the right. My Weirdboys move up to get some Smites off on the Plague Marines and my Gretchin just hold still. They don't really have a job without a mission and with Combat joined so soon. Grotsnik heads for the Blight Drone on the left to do some Powerklaw work.

Psychic & Shooting Phase
Da Jump goes off on the Pink Boyz now that Ira isn't so consolidated, my hope is to distract the remaining Plague Marines and the Characters while I punch through on both flanks. Failing that I can just sandwich the Death Guard and do some shooting while I'm at it. Smite kills the remaining Plague Marine Champion on the left, doing 1 Wound back to me. On the right I also Smite another few Marines down, taking 2 Wounds from Perils. Normally I would want to only get a +3 bonus on my Weirdboys but I'm so bottled up because of the early assault I have little choice.

Shooting mostly goes into the Plague Marines that aren't in Combat, killing 2, and I also drop another Marine plus Wound on the right Drone with Pistols.

Charge, Fight & Morale Phase
My Blue Boyz charge the Blightcaller, taking no damage. The Warboss on the right gets into some Plague Marines along with the Purple Boyz, and Grotsnik gets into the far-right Drone. My Pink Boyz try to Charge the Chaos Lord but fail, taking no Wounds back. I decide to start with the Purples, putting down a few Marines, and Ira Counter-Attacks with another Plague Marine unit, clearing out another few 'Ard Boyz.

I proceed with my Chargers, smacking down the Blightcaller but bouncing off the left Drone and only doing a Wound. After we've done all the back and forth I'm down 7 'Ard Boyz, lose 5 additional Green Boyz, and a few Reds. On the right one Plague Marine unit is down to 2 and the other has 3, the Blightcaller is also down 2 Wounds. My Blue Boyz also Consolidate into the Sorcerer, who kills 1. Once again Morale has no impact, I have high Leadership still and Ira's small units don't leave me much room to inflict big losses.

Death Guard Turn 2

Movement Phase
The Blight Drones Withdraw and the Chaos Lord with his Plague Marines prepare to get into the Blue Boyz. Since everything else is so stuck in we're moving pretty fast.

Psychic & Shooting Phase
Both Psychic Powers from the Sorcerer are Unbound by my Weirdboys thanks to a Command Point. A few shots ring out towards the Pink Boyz, killing 8, the Drones also spit some plague at a Warboss and the Red Boyz, doing 3 Wounds to the former and killing 7 off the latter with 12 hits!

Charge, Fight & Morale Phase
The Chaos Lord and Plague Marines both Charge the Blue Boyz, the Blight Drones Withdrew so they can't get back in. Combats are getting messy at this point but I do kill a few from the freshly Charged Plague Marines, finish off the rightmost Plague Marine unit, leaving the other on the Champion, and leaving the Blightcaller on 1 Wound. In return I'm down to 2 'Ard Boyz, lose about 10 Blues, and 1-2 Greens.

Game Summary

At this point Ira had two opponents show up for games that relate to the League I'm in so he asked that we call it here. I agreed since in the next turn I'm likely to nearly table him with multiple Smites/Powerklaws getting into the Drones, the Blightcaller almost certain to die from my barrage of attacks, and the last Plague Marine unit eating a Charge from the Pinks. That would leave only the Chaos Lord and Sorcerer standing whom I can slowly whittle down as needed.

Major Victory for the Orks!

  1. Appreciate the battle report once again, even though you're in process of transitioning into Tau at least in the short term. Orks are still fun.

Started a (not the first I'm sure) fairly succinct post over on /r/warhammer40k and /r/warhammercompetitive regarding Nobz with BC vs PK, also with respect to the fact that Orks don't have alot of great AV options for T8. What do you think?

    1. I will still play Orks and they absolutely are fun, I will probably just favor Tau in my more competitive games.

I absolutely agree that PKs are better are T8 targets, that's their job. The issue for me is that's so niche ans they're so expensive that I don't even feel like taking them. If PKs were 20pts? They might have a place. But the Big Choppa gets the job done against even T7 targets and I rely on weight of attacks, which just works out.

I hope that Powerfists come down across the board, they're nearly useless with their present cost across all armies unless they come on a unit like Termies or Meganobz. When you also consider how hard it can be to make it into Combat with those T8 targets, Knights, Baneblades, Leman Russes, other Super Heavies, since they'll be shielded in the back it also hurts the PK argument.

Bottom line Orks need a viable shooting solution, not the half-measures we were given. Until then they are going to struggle.

  2. Also, forgot to put your weirdboyz in the army list at the top?

  3. As you know I love your list but I think 10 Gretchen for 30 pts is a waste. Even if you want to hide them and use them to claim the home objectives you are better off with spending 30pts on a big gun zzap gun or big gun lobba for 30pts. The lobba you can even hide out of LOS and keep firing away. The lobba while only str5 but 48in range is still the best home obj camping unit in our index for the cost.

    1. Oh just wondering you are doing 2x battalion and a supreme command for 10command points right?

    2. Yeah it's 10 Command Points.

The Gretchin are primarily Charge screens, which Big Gunz cannot do. In this game they were Objective campers, also Big Gunz are not good at this role in ITC Missions. They move super slowly and in many of these missions the Objectives are all over and/or placed by your opponent. My list is built with those missions in mind since the normal book missions are pretty trash and I prefer not to use them.
